چکیده

The work described in this paper is focused on evaluating the effect of the processing method and nanoclay (montmorillonite) content on the tensile, compressive, and impact properties of clay-epoxy nanocomposites. Nanocomposites are synthesized by two methods: mechanical mixing and shear mixing. Both these methods are capable of producing bulk quantities of clay-epoxy nanocomposites. X-ray diffraction analysis indicates that the nanoclay has exfoliated in the mechanically mixed specimens. Results show that as nanoclay content increases the tensile modulus increases for both mechanically and shear mixed specimens, while the compressive modulus remains largely unchanged. The total energy absorption under impact loading is found to be higher in mechanically mixed specimens. Clay-Epoxy Nanocomposites: Processing and Properties

Effect of Hygrothermal Aging on the Mechanical Properties of Fluorinated and Nonfluorinated Clay-Epoxy Nanocomposites

Hydrophilic nature of epoxy polymers can lead to both reversible and irreversible/permanent changes in epoxy upon moisture absorption. The permanent changes leading to the degradation of mechanical properties due to combined effect of moisture and elevated temperature on EPON 862, Nanomer I.28E, and Somasif MAE clay-epoxy nanocomposites are investigated in this study. The extent of permanent de...

The Effect of a Rapid Heating Rate, Mechanical Vibration and Surfactant Chemistry on the Structure–Property Relationships of Epoxy/Clay Nanocomposites

The role of processing conditions and intercalant chemistry in montmorillonite clays on the dispersion, morphology and mechanical properties of two epoxy/clay nanocomposite systems was investigated in this paper. This work highlights the importance of employing complementary techniques (X-ray diffraction, small angle X-ray scattering, optical microscopy and transmission electron microscopy) to ...

Influence of Macro-Topography on Damage Tolerance and Fracture Toughness of 0.1 wt % Multi-Layer Graphene/Clay-Epoxy Nanocomposites

Influence of topographical features on mechanical properties of 0.1 wt % Multi-Layer Graphene (MLG)/clay-epoxy nanocomposites has been studied. Three different compositions were made: (1) 0.1 wt % MLG-EP; (2) 0.1 wt % clay-EP and (3) 0.05 wt % MLG-0.05 wt % clay-EP. The objective of making hybrid nanocomposites was to determine whether synergistic effects are prominent at low weight fraction of...

Thermal Stability of Imidazolium Modified Clay and Tgddm-based Epoxy Nanocomposites

High performance epoxy resin (tetra-glycidyl-4,4’diamino-diphenyl methane-TGDDM) is brittle and is sensitive to moisture absorption and thermooxidative effects. An approach to mitigate polymer sensitivity towards moisture and thermal effects is to add clay. The addition of clay to resin systems (e.g. diglycidyl ether bisphenol A-DGEBA) has often yielded an overall improvement in properties of t...

Preparation and Evaluation of Epoxy-Clay Nanocomposite Coatings for Corrosion Protection

Polymer-clay nanocomposite coatings have attracted much attention because of impressive enhancements of coating properties. In this research, both commercially available and isophoronediamine-modified montmorillonite clays were used to obtain epoxy-clay nanocomposite coatings. These nanocomposite materials with different clay loadings in the form of coatings were applied to cold-rolled steel (C...
